Forget Valentines – Love Yourself First

February 14, 2011

While romance is in the air with Valentine’s Day on February 14th, I strongly believe that before you can love someone else, you have to love yourself  and so I am declaring the week before valentines as “Love Yourself Week”!

Valentine’s day is all about romance, chocolates and flowers – which is great.  But in order for relationships to survive and thrive in the long term, it’s vital that the individuals involved are really comfortable with themselves first.

While at first glance, “loving yourself” may appear selfish, I believe that it is in fact the most selfless thing you can do. For example, when you fly on an aircraft, the safety instructions will tell you that in an emergency you should fix your own oxygen mask before trying to help anyone else. If you don’t look after yourself first, then you become someone else’s problem!

We experience our relationships in our heads and our hearts – and the way we regard ourselves reflects how we see other people. If we don’t like ourselves – and it’s worrying how few people really do – we’re effectively seeing our relationships with others through a dirty lens. When it comes down to it, we’re often far harsher on ourselves than any court in the land would be!

Loving yourself is the key to successful relationships – which is why it makes sense to declare the day before Valentine’s Day as ‘Love Yourself Week’!

My Three ‘Must Do’s’ for Love Yourself Week:

Declare a Personal Amnesty – forgive yourself for past mistakes.  When you stop beating yourself up you become a happier and more attractive person.

Reverse the Passion! – imagine that you can see yourself through the eyes of someone who has just fallen in love with you. List your attributes and spend the day basking in the ‘love glow’ and see how attractive you become!

Indulge Yourself – give yourself something you’d normally give as a gift to someone else.
